Units of Measurement Chart

In the previous article, I have written about the fundamental and derived quantities, the different system of units, Importance of measurement etc in detail. If you are not aware of that topics consider first reading my complete article about the measurement of physical quantities.

This article focuses on the units of measurement chart which is very useful while measuring a quantity. The units of measurement charts are nothing but a collection of several charts which includes the multiples and submultiples chart, units conversion chart, length unit conversion chart, mass conversion chart, time conversion chart, volume conversion chart, area conversion chart, speed conversion chart, temperature conversion chart and some physical constants list.

By going through this article you will get a brief idea about the conversion between different units and you can learn the values of some important constants.

Multiples and Submultiples chart

The multiples and submultiples of units become useful for expressing the magnitudes of physical quantities which are either too large or too small in comparison to the unit. The multiples and submultiples of units with their prefixes and symbols are given in the below table.

For example, a length of 15 inches can be converted into its SI unit metre using the above table:
(15 inches) x 0.0254 = 0.381 metres.

Similarly, a temperature of 113 Fahrenheit can be converted to Kelvin using the above table:
(113°F − 32) × 5/9 + 273.15 = 318.15K

Now let us discuss each units conversion chart separately.

The units of measurement chart for temperature conversion is given below. The below formulas can be used to convert a value of temperature from degree Celsius to Fahrenheit or to Kelvin or vice-versa.

Degree Celsius (°C) Degree Fahrenheit (°F) Kelvin (K)
°C (°C x 9/5) + 32 (°C + 273.15)
(°F – 32) x 5/9 °F {(°F – 32) x 5/9} + 273.15
(K – 273.15) {(K − 273.15) × 9/5} + 32 K

Chart 9: Temperature conversion chart

For example,

  • 22°C = (22 x 9/5) + 32 = 39.6+32 = 71.6 °F
  • 22°C = 22 + 273.15  = 295.15 K
  • 68 °F = (68 – 32) x 5/9 = 36 x 5/9 = 20°C
  • 68 °F = {(68 – 32) x 5/9} + 273.15  =20 + 273.15  =  293.15 K
  • 285 K = (285 – 273.15) = 11.85 °C
  • 285 K = {(285 − 273.15) × 9/5} + 32 = {11.85 × 9/5} + 32 = 53.33 °F
